It’s not that common to forget password or pattern lock on Android devices. At least, this never happened to me. But if in case you forgot pin/password or pattern lock of your Android device, there are still good chances that you can unlock it. Now there are several methods that you can use but in this guide, I will discuss the 3 best and the common ways to unlock any locked Android device. But there are some conditions and limitations.

How to Bypass Android Pattern, Pin or Password Lock

Method 1: Using Android Device Manager

This is the most common method used. This enables you to change the “Lock password” of your Android device. But, as I said earlier, there are some conditions and limitations to it. You can do so only if you are able to login to the Gmail account you used to signup or sign in to Play Store in your Android device, i.e. Google account associated with your Android. If you remember your login credentials, you can unlock your Android device.

  1. First, Go to Android Device Manager page and Sign in with your Gmail account that you use on your Android.
  2. Once logged in successfully, you will see your Android device name on the screen with options to either “Ring” or “Lock & Erase” your Android device. Click on “Lock & Erase Button” and then click on Lock button.
  3. A form will appear, enter the new password and click on “Lock” button.
  4. That’s it, most probably, your device will be unlocked using the new password.

However, in some cases, like in pattern lock, it may still ask for a pattern to unlock the device and might not unlock your Android completely. If it occurs, I recommend you to follow any of the method listed below.

Method 2: Using “Find My Mobile” feature on Samsung Smart Phones

Now, this method is similar to Android device manager but it gives you more control and options. Using Find My Mobile feature which is exclusive to Samsung device owners, allows you to,

1. Unlock Your Device

This option allows you to directly unlock your Samsung device using your Samsung account. Whether it’s a PIN, password, pattern or Fingerprints lock, you can unlock your device with just one click. All you need is your Samsung account Login email and password. If you forgot your Samsung account password or ID you can retrieve it easily.

  1. Go to “Find My Mobile” page and sign in using your Samsung account.
  2. On the next page, you will see your device location and options on the right side.
  3. Scroll down and choose “Unlock My Device”. Then enter your Samsung account password one last time, hit the “Unlock” button and your Samsung device will be unlocked successfully.

2. Wipe Device

This option lets you Wipe data from your Android device. Use this in case it’s stolen or lost and you know that it’s not possible to find it. This will protect your sensitive data from unauthorized access.

3. Ring Device

If you lost your device or think stolen by someone, you can use this option which will Ring your Android device at full volume. If it’s nearby you will hear the Ringtone and find your device easily.

4. Lock Your Samsung Phone

This option allows you to Lock your Android device if it’s not locked. Additionally, you can also disable “Power Off”, “Restart” and “Emergency Mode”. So you can prevent shutting down power and network connection on your device.

5. Retrieve logs

This allows you to retrieve up to 50 recent log items

6. Extend Battery Life

You can extend the battery life of your device using the Ultra or Maximum power saving mode. The name of the mode may differ, depending on the device type and OS version. Using this your device will keep on for a very long time even with the low battery.

7. Set Guardian

You can register a person as your guardian who can control your device remotely. The guardian can locate your device, can extend the battery life and can ring your device remotely.

Method 3: Using ADB commands to Unlock Any Android Device

The ADB method works only if you have enabled USB debugging in your Android device. Install ADB drivers on your Windows PC and use CMD (command prompt) to access files on your Android device.

  1. After you have installed ADB drivers, open command prompt.
  2. Connect your Android phone to your PC using the USB cable.
  3. Now Type command “adb shell rm /data/system/gesture.key”. This will remove the gesture.key which contains Pattern lock gesture. If you have used Password or PIN, then type the command ” adb shell rm /data/system/password.key”

Update: You need root access to access these files via ADB. You don’t have permission to access “data” folder in the root directory of Android where gesture.key and password.key are present.

Alternatively, you can pull gesture.key to your PC using ADB command. Then use the tool like File View Pro to view gesture.key file and convert Hex to numeric values. Removing gesture.key is easy and simple so follow that.

Method 4: Using Pattern Password Disable – Requires Custom recovery

This method works for devices installed with Custom recoveries like TWRP or ClockworkMod. If you have a rooted or non-rooted Android device with Custom recovery installed, you can just flash a zip file and your device will be unlocked.

  1. First, download Pattern-Password-Disable.zip file and transfer it to your locked device. Use Sdcard or ADB command to transfer compressed zip file in your Android device.
  2. Next, reboot device to custom recovery and tap on “Install” button.
  3. Browse and select Pattern-Password-Disable.zip file and swipe to flash zip file in TWRP or use Volume and power button to scroll, select and flash the zip file.
  4. Now reboot your Android device.

These Screenshots are Example, this is How you Flash a Zip file using TWRP Recovery

That’s it. Once you flash Pattern-Password-Disable.zip file, any lock will be disabled, the android device will be unlocked and you will be able to access your device without any Patter, PIN or password.

Method 5: Unlock Android by Factory Reset or Factory Restore Option

This is the last choice you have to get your phone back to work. If you have tried all method and none of them work because of their limitations, I recommend using this method. In the factory reset method, your device data and settings will be wiped completely and all data on that device will be lost. That’s why I recommend you to have a timely backup of your device for situations like this one.

  1. Turn off your Android device and then boot your device to recovery mode. The combination can differ for different Android devices. It can be either “Vol Up+Power+Home” button or “Vol Down+Power” button or “Power+Volume Up”. Just try all, one of them will work for sure.
  2. Once into recovery mode, use Volume Up and Down to scroll down to “Wipe Data/Factory Reset” option. Use the “Power” button to select and then allow factory reset permission.
  3. Once you allow factory reset, your device will reboot automatically and then you can setup your Android device all over once again. Restore your backed up data and you are good to go.

Method 6: What if i am using a Third Party Lock Screen App on My Android

If you are using any third party app to lock your Android device and you forgot your password or pin, it’s quite easy to unlock. All you need to do is boot your Android device into “SAFE MODE“.

  1. Press and hold your phone’s power button for a few seconds until Android prompts you to turn off your phone and reboot your device to “Safe Mode”.
  2. Once successfully booted into “SAFE MODE”, Go to applications and Uninstall the third-party lock app from your Android device.
  3. Finally, reboot your Android to normally and then set up your lock PIN or password.

Conclusion

I can understand that the password should be strong and secured. Choose a password that you can remember, use a combination of uppercase, lowercase letter with numbers and special characters or just a simple one. You can keep your password noted somewhere safe or pattern drawn if you usually forget your lock screen pattern or passwords. If you have a rooted device it’s easy to unlock it and there are several ways to do it but in a Non-rooted device you have limited options.
