Recently i bought a new Windows Ultrabook, Dell Inspiron 7560 equipped with a 4GB 940MX DDR5 GC, i7 7th gen processor and 8GB DDR4 RAM. So i need to transfer all the programs, files and Windows Settings from my older Windows laptop. One way to do this is by copying files on an external drive and transferring them to new PC. Problem with this is that you can’t transfer programs, Windows settings and User Data properly. Even if you manage somehow, most of the feature working on your older notebook will not work and you need to install all programs again.

Another way is using a dedicated tool that can ease up your burden and speed up the transfer process. You can use tools like PCMover by Laplink or EaseUS Todo PCTrans and other Data migration tools available. So today, i will discuss 4 methods with which you can easily backup, transfer or migrate your Windows OS or Windows OS program files data from old to new PC or Laptop.

Method 1: Using Windows Easy Transfer Tool

Windows Easy Transfer” is an inbuilt tool in Windows. With Windows 8.1, this tool no longer has the option to transfer files and settings over the network. However, you can use an external hard drive and run the Easy Transfer wizard to transfer your stuff to the drive.

  • Launch it by tapping the Windows key to open the Start menu or Start screen, typing “Easy Transfer” without the quotes and run it.
  • Connect that drive to the new PC, and run the easy transfer wizard to transfer your stuff from the drive to the new PC.

Method 2: Using PCMover Express by Laplink

Microsoft partnered with Laplink to enable transfer selected files and folders easily from your old Windows PC to new Windows 10 PC. Any personalized settings and preferences on your new PC won’t be affected when you transfer your data using PCMover express. It allows you to automatically transfer compatible applications to your new Windows 10 PC. So you should definitely try it out.

It’s currently available for $15 USD or INR 1050 after 50% discount if you get it via Microsoft’s official page. If you want to purchase from Laplink’s page, it will cost you $29.95 USD or INR 2100.

Method 3: Using EaseUS Todo PCTrans Tool

I used the EaseUS Todo PCTrans tool from Ease US and it worked like a charm. It’s a free PC transfer software for Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, XP or Server 2003, 2008, 2012. It’s used to transfer application, music, picture, document, etc to new computer. The free version is very limited and you need to upgrade it. To upgrade you need to pay but there are articles you can search on Google to get License code for free, but i recommend upgrading it via EaseUS official page.

The PCTrans offers 3 Modes to transfer your older Windows program files, user data and settings.

1. PC Transfer via Network Connection

In this mode, you can Connect two PCs on the same LAN to transfer files/programs to target machine directly.

2. PC Migration via Image file

This will let you create image file and transfer programs to new computer fast, particularly useful for Windows in-place upgrade.

3. Local Transfer

It can be used to transfer all updated applications between local disks easier and make full use of local disk space.

I used PC Migration via Image file and i must say it was fast. I used an external Hard drive to create and transfer .PCT image file of all programs, settings and user data on my older laptop using PCTrans to my new Ultrabook. The process was easy and quick.

Method 4: Using Samsung Data Migration Tool

This method is superfast and easiest of all i listed above. You can use Data Migration Software from Samsung to migrate Windows OS (7,8 or 10) from old PC or laptop to new. I personally used this tool almost 6 months back when i upgraded my old laptop’s RAM and change conventional HDD with a Samsung 750 Evo SSD. However, This tool only works for Samsung SSD products. Like 470 Series, 750 Series, 830 Series, 840 Series, 850 Series and 950 Series. This software is not compatible with other manufacturers’ SSDs.

Conclusion

While all four methods works pretty well, i find PCMover express tool to be more advanced. You can choose what settings, files and programs you want to transfer. Other than that, the PCMover Express from Laplink also offers some advance features like rescue hard drive contents from non-working PC and ability to restore old PC image to new Operating System. So i definitely recommend it over EaseUS Todo PCTrans which is also a good tool if you are migrating or changing your Windows PC. If you are upgrading your PC with a new faster SSD storage, i definitely recommend Samsung SSD’s. Use Data Migration tool from Samsung to transfer Windows OS with settings and all user data with programs from your older PC’s HDD to new SSD.
