Android for PC

Hey Guys..!! We’ve talked previously about How to install Android 4.3 on Computer/Laptops/Netbook and Now This is a tutorial about Installation of Android 4.4 KitKat which is the latest version of Android launched till date, on your Netbook or Laptop/Computer along with your Windows 8 or Windows 7 OS. Whether you want to play with Google’s mobile operating system or give new life to an otherwise discarded device, Android-x86 gives everyone a way to install Android on Intel netbooks or Laptops.

It’s fast. Even better: the latest version of Android-x86 comes with access to the Android Market, something almost impossible to set up on older Intel versions of the software. This means you can try out Android apps on Android 4.4 KitKat before you decide to buy an Android device.

Heck, your Netbook could end up becoming your Android device with Windows 8 or 7(MultiBoot).

It’s not terribly complicated to install, especially if you’ve installed some form of Linux in the past. Let’s walk through the process, then briefly explore Android on the netbook.

Features of Android 4.4.2 x86  KitKat for Computer/Laptops:

  • Integration of the ffmpeg as the stagefright-plugins to support much more multimedia files. Now we can play HD and full HD videos in apps.
  • Use the latest longterm stable kernel 3.10.30 with more drivers enabled. Most netbooks can run Android-x86 in the native resolution.
  • OpenGL ES hardware acceleration for AMD Radeon and Intel chipsets (not include the PowerVR chips).
  • Enhance the installer to support upgrade from previous versions (since ics-x86). The text based GUI installer supports ext3/ext2/ntfs/fat32 filesystems.
  • KitKat style lanucher (Launcher3).
  • Support Multi-touch, Wifi, Audio, Bluetooth, G-sensor and Camera.
  • Simulate sdcard by internal storage.
  • External usb drive and sdcard are auto mounted to /storage/usbX on plugging.
  • Support hybrid mode of iso images.
  • Multi-user support (max 8).
  • Support Ethernet (DHCP only).
  • Support VM like Qemu and VMware.

Step One: Download Androidx86 4.4-RC1 KitKat.iso

To get started, head to the Androidx86 project page. You’ll find the download here, but make sure you download the latest version: 4.4, better known as KitKat.

There is only one versions of 4.4 offered and it runs smoothly on almost every Laptop and netbook with 32-Bit.

Desktop users: it’s probably not worth trying if you own a 64-Bit Machine but if you have a 32-bit or x86 based machine then Go Ahead.

Step Two: Copy To A Flash Drive

Now that you found the ISO file you need, it’s time to write it to a USB drive so you can boot from it. There are two main programs for doing this: UNetBootIn, which is cross platform, and Linux Live, which is only for Windows but very straightforward.

Use whichever you prefer; just copy the contents of the ISO to a flash drive. It doesn’t need to be huge: 1 GB should do it.

Step Three: Install

Now that you’ve got your USB drive, it’s time to boot from it. You’ll see this boot screen:

If you just want to try out Android, go ahead and select the LiveCD mode. You won’t be able to save any customizing you do, of course, but it’s a good way to see how well Android works on your system.

If you’d rather get straight to installing Android, go ahead and pick the “Install” option. There’s not a lot of options for dual-booting built into the installer, so be warned: getting that working might take some skills on your part. See the Androidx86 installation instructions for more information. If you don’t care about losing your current OS, though, installation is straight-forward.

Screenshots of Installation:

Now that You have installed the Android 4.4 KitKat Os Successfully, you can enjoy all android apps and games on your System.

Many Google staples are included, along with a number of other utilities and games. The best part: AndroidX86 now comes with access to the Android Market. Not everything will work, but I got my favorites apps working: Dropbox, Evernote, Wunderlist and Toggl. I even found a remote for XBMC that I’ll surely be writing about later. With some help from Google Voice I even got SMS messaging up and running!

You can install enjoy Whatsapp Messenger, We Chat and other Apps with ease.

Conclusion

Why try this? First of all: because it’s fun. Sure, it’s not the same as buying a new Android tablet, but breathing new life into an otherwise idle netbook is cool. Don’t forget to Share and subscribe us by entering your E-mail ID or Follow us on Google+

  1. Thanks Ravi, I could successfully Install Android 4.4.4 KitKat swiftly by seeing your blog.. The Graphics are certainly better on my full 21″ Full HD PC monitor and my kids are very for it.

Following are the the problem I faced and want to have a solution if you may offer. Basically android devices have orientation sensor and also the zooming in or out is achieved by strectching or pinching the touch pad which is not possible on my desktop.

    1) Only the games that are natively made for Landscape fit to the PC Screen and work properly, while the portrait (although ~ 480 – 800, aspect ration is too big to be called) appear as sleeping images. I can not allow my kids to rotate my PC monitor for their fun!!! please suggest some remedy..

    2) I could zoom in the google map till the maximum magnification by everytime tripple tapping the keyboard but no method is know to me to zoom out.. please let me know if you are aware of it..

Please mail me the solution at zoompankaj@gmail.com. Thanks in Advance, Pankaj

    1. Having the same problems. I wish there was for me to not have to tilt my laptop sideways in order to see an app >_>.

      1. Lock the screen orientation next time you start your system. Also be informed that many apps run only in the Portrait mode. If you lock screen orientation in Landscape mode, your screen will rotate to portrait but as soon as you exit the app it will be back to it’s landscape mode.

    2. Use dollowing Keyboard Shortcuts :
Press F12 two times in less than 2 seconds = Rotate 90º to the LEFT.
Press F11 two times in less than 2 seconds = Rotate 90º to the RiGHT.
Press F10 two times in less than 2 seconds = Rotate 180º.
Press F9 two times in less than 2 seconds = Normal view 0/360º.

And when using Browser or google maps use these shortcits to zoom in an out :
      CTRL+I = Zoom-in on page.
      CTRL+O = zoom-out on page.

  2. Installation is done successfully but it stops with green screen when I try to load android from grub boot loader what to do

  3. Installation done successfully but it stops with green screen when after I try to load from grub boot loader

  4. Hi,
How to select the specific created partition (example : partition nammed KitKat under win7) during installation ?
’cause I can’t find out which one it is…. among the different choices.

Under Win7, my unique hard drive is partionned as following :
    – 13Go Backup partion
    – 100Mo System Reserved
    – 545Go Win7_OS

all these 3 are main partitions

and at last I’ve created a 4th partition (logical drive)
    -39Go KitKat_OS.

How can I determine, during kitkat 4.4.2 installation, wich one is the “39Go KitKat_OS” partition ?

    Thank you

  11. Hi! Thank you very much for this tutorial. It helped me a lot. I have a question though. I have installed android 4.4 on a partition that has 50GB of free storage, expecting to take advantage of that huge space. But when I checked the Storage settings on Android, it shows me only 1GB of storage available for usage. Is it possible to extend its storage to upto 50GB (more or less)? Thanks in advance for your reply. Cheers!

    1. Yes you can get more storage upto 32GB but for that you need a external Hard Drive or pen drive which should be formatted to ext3. You can install it in USB drive and can use it in any pc or laptop whenever and wherever you want to. Just select the USB hard drive while installing Androidx86.

  30. Hello Ravi, very nice tutorial. Tks.
I’ve installed the brand new version 4.4 R5 from android-x86 site directly on my desktop.
So, I don’t have wifi and at my work I need to access without DHCP (Fixed IP only).
I get access to internet using this tutorial (hxxp://allskyee.blogspot.com.br/2014/09/setting-up-network-for-android-x86.html) but I cant download anything and google service does not recognize I’m online.
Surfing on the web I’ve found an ethernet patch, but I don’t know how to install, neither where can I download it.
    Could you help me please?

    1. There is no code and UI to set static ip. But if you can set it manually, it should work. Alternatively, Try “ethernet droid ” app from play store.
      Good Luck!

      1. Tks for your reply. But my problem would be solved if I might download something or login on google play. I’ll try this modified iso with ethernet patch https://goo.gl/QX8DOS. If I win this battle I’ll report to you.
Tks to increase the support for this operation system.
