Why isn’t the Play Store pre-installed in Remix OS?

Typically a device maker that wants to use the Play Store ships the hardware to Google for testing. But since Remix OS for PC is designed to run on thousands of different hardware configurations, that would be an impractical way to go in this case. Jide co-founder David Ko says the company is in talks with Google about ways to include the Play Store, possibly by testing and certifying just a certain set of hardware.

Since Google Play Store is not preloaded onto Remix OS for PC and there are many different instructions out there that describe how you can download and install Google Play store, I have decided to post the most updated, accurate and simplest one here.

  1. Download the GMSActivator.apk directly onto your Remix OS using any web browser.
  2. Click on the downloaded file to install it (You may need to change your settings to allow installation of apps from unknown sources. Settings > Security > Device Administration)
  3. Open the installed file
  4. Select “Install Google Services”
  5. Reboot OS. That’s all!
